The Washington Post reports that the county council yesterday questioned a property tax proposal by county executive Doug Duncan to reduce the tax rate to 85 cents per $100 assessed value of a property, a 9.5 cent reduction in the tax rate. County budget analysis shows
a potential $800 million deficit within six years, Duncan’s team argues it would be more around $100 million.

Steven A. Silverman (D-At Large) has proposed instead a $468 per household one-time credit, arguing that it would help lower income residents. Marilyn Praisner (D-Eastern County) proposed a 5 cent tax rate cut and a one-time $211 credit to each household.

With the county hitting a high level of spending many are questioning the tax cut but others like Praisner argue that the county has a “perfect bond rating”.
