David Fogel’s creative insight has brought us many amazing exhibits at Silver Spring’s very own public art gallery.
Gateway’s Heliport Gallery, located at 8001 Kennett St. Suite 3 in the Gramax building, has been in operation since April 2005 and is a part of Gateway Georgia Avenue Revitalization Corporation’s efforts to cultivate and nurture the creative infrastructure in South Silver Spring (South Point). It’s tagline, a launch pad for the arts and community, is in reference to the gallery’s vision as a place for under represented artists from many background to get the chance to have their work exhibited in a professional environment as well as a place for the community to see, learn about and experience wonderful fine art.
The Gateway’s Heliport Gallery is currently hosting the exhibit Out of Your Frame
Out of Your Frame, an exhibit of work by artists from Studio Downstairs, is a two- pronged exhibit that provides the artist and viewer a unique experience. It features great artistic pieces by people with mental illness and is free to attened.
Out of Your Frame is in line with previous shows at Gateway’s Heliport Gallery that have provided a spotlight for area artists who have yet to find themselves prominently featured in the DC area’s cultural scene. Gateway Georgia Avenue Revitalization Corporation and Studio Downstairs take great pride in the opportunity to present this work to the public. Out of Your Frame is a wonderful representation of the depth of talent in our area and sheds an important light on a sector of our community whose skills are not often explored and celebrated. We hope that the exhibit helps educate us all in the intricacies associated with mental illness, that it dismantles some of the barriers we have carried around with us and in effect creates a more compassionate and educated community.
This exibit runs from April 7th through June 5th
The Heliport Art Gallery is always free to attend, with food and activities at special events.
Gallery hours are Tue – Fri., 4 – 7pm or by appointment.

Commentary: This is exactly what Silver Spring needs to add to it’s already unique character. Many like to call Silver Spring just another suburb with no history, throwing it in same category as tract housing and large subdivisions. As dense and old as Silver Spring is, The Silver Spring Scene believes that this far from the truth as you can get. You don’t put public art galleries in the suburbs.

Thanks for the post and all that you’re doing to create community, Silver Spring Scene! I must say that after a year in existence, the Heliport has proven to be an incredible, tangible example of the power that the arts can have in affecting community change and direction. Opening nights typically bring, 130 people to SoPo. The economic afects of which are positively felt by the surrounding restaurants. On top of that the gallery usually receives an average of another 100 visitors during each show. These people bring life and vitality to our community, the art aids in personal growth and communication…never mind of course the beauty. It’s open to everyone, please join us!
Thanks again Silver Spring Scene!
