Resident Thinks Purple Line is Redundant
By Silver Springer • Jun 21st, 2006 • Category: UncategorizedChecking out the previous “Letters to the Editor” section in the Gazette, an interesting point of view on the purple line can be found,
“It amazes me that there is such an interest in a Purple Line between Bethesda and Silver Spring. According to the Metro map I use, both jurisdictions are currently connected by rail. On the same Red Line no less.
Not only does the Metro run between Bethesda and Silver Spring, but there also are bus routes that take even less time than rail.
I see no need to squander millions of dollars on this rail route when alternatives are in place. To save 15 minutes? Please. How lazy are we? Use taxpayer money a little more efficiently.
Julie Stanish, Chevy Chase”
Commentary: Sounds like she was sent from the trenches of a certain golf course country club. Like they say…opinions are like assholes, everybody has one but this one in particular really stinks.

I saw this. This person is an idiot… 15 minutes? Has she tried taking the Metro from SS to Bethesda? I doubt she’s ever taken Metrorail or Metrobus anywhere in her life. Not to mention the extra cost to go all the way around the red line. Buses aren’t effective because they get stuck in traffic with the rest of the cars (at the EW highway/CT Ave traffic light, for example.) When it snows the buses are all off schedule as well.
This looks like a disengenuous arguement from someone who doesn’t know how much it costs to take public transportation
Youre right! That person is an idiot! They must have not riden the train from Silver Spring to Bethesda. Otherwise they would be praising the Purple Line.
I’m sorry, 15 minutes??? What parallel universe is she riding in? The last time I did it, it took nearly an hour. Not to mention the cost.
I would like to personally invite Mrs. Stanish to come on my daily commute from Silver Spring to Bethesda. I bet she’s never been in a bus going ten miles an hour down East-West Highway - not necessarily because of traffic, but because of the smartly-dressed bicyclist in the right lane oblivious to the annoyed commuters behind him. He was coming from Chevy Chase, by the way.
I cordially invite Ms. Stanish to hop on a J2 or the 1 and call the riders “lazy” to their faces.
And hey! She might even recognize one or two of the riders…the ones who were cleaning her kitchen or tending her garden earlier that day.
Yes I bet she’d fire one of her servants for being late due to their bus being cought in a snowstorm on the way from Silver Spring.
I wonder what Ms. Stanish thinks would be a more efficient use of money. The reality, as has been pointed out above, is that taking the bus from SS Metro to Bethesda (the only viable public transit option) during rush hour takes on average 45 minutes - 1.15 hours. The busses are typically late and then, like everyone else stuck in traffic. The purple line will be an economic, environmental and social boon for down county. Think a bit harder and study a bit more Ms. Stanish, everyone’s laughing at you right about now.
This is Julie Stanish–and yes, I do ride the metro and have ridden the J2 and Tenleytown buses and it only takes an EXTRA 10-15 minutes to ride the metro from what it does to take the bus. I regularly ride from Bethesda to Brookland and there is hardly anyone who rides past Metro Center toward Silver Spring. So, NO, I do not support the Purple Line as I feel it will be under utilized.
