Purple Line Commentary

More discussions and details on the impact of the Purple Line is leading to more commentary from proponents and opponents.

Here are a few reader comments,

From AnnR: I’m a longtime Takoma Park and Silver Spring resident who is opposed to the Purple Line. Why? It will serve a relatively small area, it’s capital-intensive and it doesn’t address sprawl.

I say put public transit hooks into the exploding outer urban areas, where the cost of retrofitting into tight spaces doesn’t make projects so darn expensive.

From Dan: Although the Purple Line will directly serve a fairly short distance, it will also serve a large chunk of the Red Line by allowing passengers to transfer to Purple and bypass downtown.

Although there are legitimate concerns about the routing of the Purple Line, there are so many good reasons to build it that the effort should not be allowed to stall. This is the moment for the Purple Line, just as the 2002 election was the moment for the intercounty connector. Maryland voters should not accept an okay-sure-fine level of commitment from politicians seeking local, state and federal offices this year. Now is the time to make them sign in blood.

Dirty Talk At the Strip Mall Dumpster

“Mommy, maybe someone was having sex and threw their clothes out the car window!”

It totally freaked me out.

Another Review of Gallery Restaurant and Lounge

Gallery Restaurant and Lounge replaced the African club Izora (I wish we could have both). In fear that we would be loosing another night life venue, the Gallery has improved from its beginnings although the cover can be quite pricey on event parties. If you continue to offer $2.00 domestic beers on Thurdays till 10p.m. then I will be able to continue luring my alcohol loving friends there.Washington Post

Economic Impact of the Turf
It far outweighs what will be replacing it, not the Civic building it’s self but what will go in front of it. In fact couldn’t we reduce the foot print of the Ellsworth Condos (why does it take up so much space?) so we can push back the Civic building and leave more space for the turf? Or increase the height of the Civic building and reduce the foor print?

The Silver Spring Singular reports about how “PACKED” Downtown Silver Spring was because WB (or is it CW?) was hosting a movie night that brought people from all over the region. If you know the D.C. area well, there really isn’t another place you could host such a large event. Rosslyn-Ballston can’t do it neither can Bethesda. This is a great economic and social advantage for Silver Spring. PLEASE KEEP THE TURF!

  1. I’m really OK without the turf. North Bethesda has the movie nights still at Strathmore. It was extremely crowded this week/weekend downtown, actually somewhat overwhelmingly-so as getting to the restaurants and such was a pain.

  2. Yeah, but who wants to go to North Bethesda?? As far as I’m concerned, that’s not even a real place. Its ROCKVILLE.

  3. It’s not far. Ten or 15 minutes from my house which is 5 minutes from downtown Silver Spring.

And yeah, North Bethesda as a name is a little pretentious, but as long as they’re not actually in Rockville who’s border is about a mile north (like the new condo Midtown Bethesda North which is inside Rockville city limits), who cares. Technically, White Flint Mall is in Kensington, according to the post office (which also states that using North Bethesda with a 20895 zip code is “unacceptable”), even though it is north of Strathmore.

  4. But Pennster, don’t you want an asset like this for for Silver Spring? I think Bethesda and North Bethesda have had “all they can eat”.

Why have to go all the way up there when it’s in your own backyard?

  5. Because that space was meant for the civic center. The turf would be great if we could have everything, but the reality is, you cannot, unless you can find a piece of flat land that for some crazy reason someone doesn’t want to use in downtown. Everyone knew it was going to go, and that is why we have a state of the art parks system for people to use.

  6. Silver Spring can be also be re-named “East Chevy Chase”. Maybe that will increase property values and the residents’ sense of self-worth.

  7. I think people in Silver Spring have more pride in their name than most places.
