When: 4 - 10pm, Saturday Sept. 2nd

What:
88 degrees is a day-time artistic amalgamation fusing electronic summer sounds with the creation of visual art including video projection; avant-garde portrait art for those seeking a unique experience while enjoying Saturday drinks and dinner at the region’s newest restaurant/lounge. Participants and attendees include the rising tide of the ‘creative class’. The event merges organized artistic elements, with an environment open to artistic spontaneity. The event, takes place on the 4,000 square foot outdoor terrace of Gallery Restaurant and Lounge (www.gallerysilverspring.com) located in SoPo Silver Spring. The terrace, with vistas of downtown Silver Spring and an environment surrounded by early-1900 chimneys, provides the ultimate backdrop for an outdoor urban party serving exquisite Latin/Carribean dining and drinks.

88 degrees featured in Spin magazine, Shift E-Zine, The Washington Post, DC Examiner and Silver Spring Voice brings together DJs/producers that aim to take the listener on an extended journey. This month will feature 5 Live PA acts from the internationally renowned Microcosm crew (Ezekiel Honig, Morgan Packard, Nicholas Sauser, Ben Parris and Miskate). Microcosm Music is a New York City-based label releasing variations of minimal and quirky techno, textural ambience, and electro-acoustic compositions. The label is more concerned with the feel of the music than genre per se, with emphasis on personality and trying new ways of working within modern minimal music.

From BPM Magazine, August 2005: If you like your techno deep - I mean really deep - then New York’s Ezekiel Honig is a name you need to know. With his recent album, People Places & Things garnering critical acclaim from those in the know, his melodic, textural compositions have found a home in the hearts of appreciators worldwide. His latest album project, a collaborative effort with Morgan Packard entitled Early Morning Migration, is an essential work of hypnotic, minimalist sound sculptures for late nights and early mornings. www.microcosm-music.com

From 5 – 8pm, the DJs will be artistically accompanied by the 4Traits an ‘assembly line portrait art collective’. Traditionally, portrait art has been an intimate process a work of art created by one artist working with one subject. 4Traits are an entirely new concept. A team of artists working together on a group of portraits. In an assembly line fashion, every artist adding to every portrait publicly, simultaneously improvising as they go, like a jazz quartet.

Once the lights go out, video projections for this event will be provided by Baltimore artist Kari Altmann (www.blackmothstudios.com). Blackmoth aka Kari Altmann is a digital multimedia artist from Texas, currently attending MICA in Baltimore as a video major. Her work has been featured in places like Beautiful Decay, Ruby Mag, AMODA in Austin, and various websites. Video and animation are her newest arenas to experiment with and this is one of her first and freshest vj gigs. Blackmoth is known for her use of color, her experimental nature, and her ability to connect to people via imagery. A big fan of anything innovative, charming, or simply emotionally honest, her works are always a tricky mix of personal, surreal, or ambiguous messages.

Joining Kari will also be 5 year fire dancing veteran Miss Joule (www.missjoule.com). Performing at 8:30pm, Miss Joule promises to bring an array of dance routines and implements to the evening including: poi, hoops, fingers and fans.

Saturday’s final 88 degrees happening of the summer promises to be a unique, blow-out day/evening event that you will not want to miss! Come see why this event has attracted so much attention from artists and creatives alike!

  1. wow! now that’s cool, hip and diverse or maybe those words are synonymous. Well done Gallery.

Looks like we should do our ‘no rain’ dance.
