Silver Spring Scene News Round Up
By Silver Springer • Aug 30th, 2006 • Category: UncategorizedTaste of Morocco and Coldstone
Has anybody else been to Taste of Morocco? I went there over the weekend (it’s in City Place mall). The food was great (couscous will be my new friend and substitute for rice) but the place was empty! They went all out with the decorations and even played the authentic Moroccan music. I also didn’t get to witness the belly dancers! Next time I will get my timing right.
As for Coldstone Creamery, their ice cream is good (not as good as everybody hyped it up to be) but that isn’t really the problem I had with the place. I know why the lines are so long and it’s not because of the ice cream. THEY ARE SLOW!!! You would think they were making me a full course meal with how long they made me wait. I don’t understand why they have to mash everything together either (kind of dirty and gross to me), I can do it my self and save the added time and cost.
Perez supports Simms
Tom Perez, who was disqualified in the race for attorney general because he did not practice law for at least 10 years in the State of Maryland. He offers his support to Stu Simms who is also running for attorney general.Gazette
Commentary:Did Tom Perez have a position on any of the major issues? He seemed more to hide behind the scenes and only reveiled himself when there was an issue on the table that hit “close to home”.
Montgomery College Takoma Park\Silver Spring Student Center Grand Opening
The $32.9 million student center at the Takoma Park\Silver Spring campus of Montgomery College. Gazette
Commentary: It looks amazing inside. Before the expansion students would have to registar in one building and pay thier tuition in another. Now it’s all in one place. Not to mention the much needed computer labs.
Remember the Mayor?
Fred Folsom creator of the sculpture in Mayor Lane (which needs an update). It was wrong for them to do it but I remember outsiders used to make fun of Silver Spring because of that. Gazette

Just wanted to say that a planner at the department said that plans for an 8-story addition on City Place have been filed but not yet distributed (to the public, I’m guessing). The previous project/site plans expired because they were approved 18 years ago. He has heard no word yet on the Rite Aid site.
If they didn’t mash everything together on a “cold stone”, it wouldn’t really be “Cold Stone Creamery”…
I will make a trip up to “the wizard” and see what I can find.
I’m one of the bellydancers at Taste of Morocco, and honestly, the place being empty is a real problem. I think it’s the fact that it’s in City Place Mall that’s the cause — if it were down the street by the Whole Foods or something, it’d get much more foot traffic.
Thanks for posting! There is a saying that anything that goes in City Place mall is doomed but I hope you guys stick around. You need to get word out somehow!
If the Birchmere was up and running I’m sure the place would do very well. That side of downtown needs to be jump started somehow.
I love Cold Stone…it’s my favorite ice cream place.
I found the food in Taste of Morocco to be a little bland for North African food, quite frankly. Which is odd because when I was in Casablanca it was some of the tastiest stuff I’ve ever add. Not quite Mediterranean, but highly influenced. I also thought the flat bread was gorgeous. But the locale in SS just doesn’t cut it for me, but I still hope they stick it out through the lean times because the place could become a dining cornerstone in City Place or elsewhere along that strip of Colesville once the inevitable revival of that area picks up steam. So thats what you get up to Sparkles, huh? I’ve seen you around, commentating on some mutually read blogs. Coolness.
Anyone have any opinion on Moorenkas? I find Coldstone TOO filling.
Went to Moorenko’s and Mayorga on Sunday night, but only got something from Mayorga. My friend said the ice cream at Moorenko’s was good, though. Great for south Silver Spring (aka SoPo for South Point), especially because the place was busy after 8 on a Sunday night.
I find the ice-cream at Moorenko’s way too sweet for my liking. I think they have some great flavors - if only they’d go easy on the sugar - maybe take a page from York Castle Ice-Cream (Tropical Ice Cream) on the corner of Georgia Ave and 16th Street, which is the best stuff around.
I too hope that Taste of Morrocco rides it out - its too good a restaurant to lose because they took a chance on City Place earlier than most. Perhaps a little creative marketing would help, such as distributing free-samples on the Ellsworth side like Cakelove sometimes does.
Yesssss… York Castle. A little out of the way from DTSS but WELL worth it.
FWIW, I’ve worked at nearly every Moroccan/Middle Eastern restaurant in the DC metro area (including the two biggest names - Casablanca and Marrakesh), and for my money’s worth, TOM has the best food of any of them. I bought a gallon of their harira the last time I danced there so I could freeze it and take it into the office for lunch.
I know the owners are working to get their name out a little more, but the fact that there are three of them, and all of them have to have their own say, makes it a little bit complicated sometimes!
Thanks for the link to the article of The Mayor’s bust and the artist who made it.
It’s one of the wonderfully quirky things about DTSS that I love and hope we don’t lose in the redevelopment.
The Birchmere is coming to Silver Spring! WOOHOO!
Check it out on Silver Spring, Singluar
moooooooooooooranko!!
it’s moorenko’s not mooranko
To who ever said Moorenko’s ice cream is too sweet, are you kidding? I thought Coldstone was sweeter. Both are about the same price though but kind of expensive. Anyways, I’m not a big ice cream fan.
