Silver Spring Scene News Round Up

“No Fire Sale Here”
There is an article in the Washington Post about the sale of the old Fire Station. The Fire Department is in no rush and is waiting for the right bidder. They would like to see it turned into a brewery or restaurant. Enough restaurants I’m ready to see a different use with this particular facility. I always thought it should be turned into a museum but if we have to go the retail route a night club or brewery would be nice. Silver Spring needs another special attraction.

What are your ideas for the station outside the usual restaurants?

Here is a Nice Letter About Silver Spring in the Gazette

Like the development, not the traffic

Lola Demma, Silver Spring

Now that we in downtown Silver Spring live in a thriving business district, I hear a lot of election-year ‘‘anti-growth” talk. In past years, many houses on the edge of this once boarded-up area had ‘‘For Sale” signs for months, but houses now sell quickly and for good prices.

The development has benefited me personally: I can shop and go to restaurants and theaters 10 minutes from my home. And the value of my house has increased along with the resurgence of the downtown area. I can’t be anti-growth when I’m so pleased with what has happened in my own neighborhood.

Of course, this all comes with nerve-racking traffic: I must rely on the kindness of strangers to get out of my residential side street.

If all development and building were to stop today, we would continue to have the same level of traffic. So, let’s address the real problem — traffic. I’m looking to support candidates who address that issue.

  1. Two words…hotdog stand!

  2. I’m really happy about that letter. The anti-growth sentiment in Silver Spring can only be quashed by the people themselves; bloggers (even though we are people) can only do so much.

As for the firehouse - I’d really love to see a music venue there, but I doubt it’s cheap enough for a 9:30 Club-esque place to take it.

  3. We’re already getting a music venue (supposedly), so I doubt they’d do that. A furniture store would be good in that space. I still want an architectural salvage store (a la Brass Knob), but that ‘aint happening.

  4. A lot of people have been suggesting a Café to rival Mayorga.

I’ve heard a lot of hype around Busboys and Poets.
