Silver Spring Catches Three in a Row

By Silver Springer • Mar 8th, 2007 • Category: Uncategorized

The Washington Post is talking about it, so is the Gazette, but remember that you read it here first on the Silver Spring Scene. Recent news revealing Hook and Ladder Brewing Co. will be moving into the old historic fire house is part of an influx of independent business inundating Silver Spring.

Southern Georgia Avenue is embarking on a Critical mass in entertainment and shopping. In just the past week three new commercial independent businesses have situated themselves on one of Silver Spring’s main arteries.

One of the new businesses with intent to open up in Silver Spring is Olazzo Italian Restaurant. With one location in downtown Bethesda, Olazzo has already applied for a county liquor license in the space previously occupied by Half-moon Barbeque.

Pieces of Silver Spring quickly took the store front space previously occupied by Bell flowers, which moved to the rear of the building. The upscale clothing boutique is catering to a wealthy demographic. Reviewed on the Penguin, the owner has other “Pieces” in Brooklyn and Harlem, NY, and Hoboken, NJ. The Silver Spring location is the first in the state of Maryland and the entire D.C. area, another testament to how far Silver Spring has come and solidifies its ability to attract businesses that are a first for Maryland and the D.C. area.

The build up of new independent businesses just in the past week is contrary to those who protest that Silver Spring is loosing its independent businesses or is engulfed by national chains.

  1. Your ‘consolidated’ report on these three additions to Georgia Ave helps put in perspective the momentum that is building on GA Ave and in this part of Silver Spring. I hope that this is just another sign that there is no turning back.

If this type of re-development continues, it will give us a much needed alternative to the big chains, who have their places, and independently owned businesses.

  2. All I can say is, with all the attention this place is getting, it had better be good.

That’s what I was trying to convey. Whoever says Silver Spring is all chains needs to get new glasses. The ability to attract businesses outside the region and state again and again is only going to make Silver Spring more of a destination.

  4. Someone posted that Ozio was coming to Silver Spring where the Half-Moon BBQ place used to be. He or she screwed up the name…it’s Olazzo–not Ozio.

That’s what I thought too but checked it out myself. I would have preferred the former though. Another club would have been good.

  6. Man so no Ozio? Aww darn!

Congrats to SS for stepping it up though. Another lounge would be nice.

  7. Silver Springer, thanks for the posting love the information on your blog.

Just went to Pieces and they have a great line of clothes, a great addition for people wanting to get their shop in in Silver Spring, finally!

RE: Big Chain Restaurants brings in more revenue for Silver Spring.

Maybe you just wat everybody that visits the DC area to remain in DC/Arlington/Alexandria and forget that Silver Spring and Betheda exist.

To be honest Silver Spring should get a Hooters, Legal Seafood, California Pizza, and Bring back Carolina’s Kitchen.

  9. Why would I want anyone to forget Silver Spring exists? I LIVE HERE. I do miss Carolina Kitchen in a big way (Welcome! Welcome! they used to say when you walked in the door).

  10. To be fair the Gazette is owned by the Washington Post
But Kudos on being the first to report!

  11. I was impressed with Pieces. I wish the blogs had featured this place a bit more considering that this is big news. I am excited that a high-end store would move to the upper Georgia area - so this maybe a big trend.

  12. I was at Pieces yesterday and I never thought I would be saying it but I actually like their clothing.

  13. looks like i will be going to Pieces Saturday :)
