In Silver Spring Scene’s opinion, this is still the best project underway in downtown. During “Rating the Projects”, a review of the best and worst projects in downtown Silver Spring, United Therapeutics’ headquarters was crowned number one development. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but effort and passion are universal forces that anybody can see and those factors stood out above the rest in every category. It’s a tier one project, Schick Goldstein Architects PC are responsible for the design.

Yesterdays Silver Spring Citizen Advisory Board, economic development meeting, included what seems to be a never ending stream of development presentations.

Changes to the last plans include a substantial update to phase three. Phase one, which is a drug manufacturing facility, is already completed. Phase two includes additional research and laboratory space. A “Unitherium” is also part of phase three. The Unitherium is coined by United Therapeutics as an auditorium space that will be for private and public use. Still intact are the Biowall and 16,000 square feet of ground floor retail (although rearranged).

The planners are aiming for a LEED Silver rated building with the largest photovoltaic solar panels inside the beltway.

  1. These buildings are going to be really cool. What I find coolest is United Therapeutics cooperation with its neighbors-to-be (Silver Place development, condos that will take over St. Charles apartment complex) to create cohesive, complementary public spaces.
