Discovery is launching a ‘green’ channel and making changes to its headquarters building. According to the Business Journal, Discovery Communications is trading in the Discovery Home Channel for one that is eco-friendly. Silver Spring headquartered Discovery makes a fitting move in Montgomery County, Maryland, which recently passed legislation requiring all public and private developments submitted from 2008 to be at least LEED certified.

Inspired by the highly acclaimed “Planet Earth” series, the ‘green’ channel will launch next year, third quarter with $50 million to boot and a series called “Ten Ways to Save the Planet,”. Hitting home, the Discovery building will be converted to go “carbon-neutral”.

United Therapeutics is the cover story of the Washington Business Journal. Titled “Biotech Gets a Glitzy Perch in Silver Spring”, the article reports the new $205 million United Therapeutics headquarters underway in downtown Silver Spring. Silver Spring Scene first reported on the design alterations and the project was picked number one in the “Rating the Projects” review. The first phase laboratory is complete; the second phase that was recently altered includes 150,000 square feet of office space, 85,000 square feet of lab space and 16,000 square feet of retail. There is room for at least 300 employees in the dramatically designed and eco-friendly building.

United Therapeutics corporation is Maryland’s most consistently profitable biotech and one of the largest in the D.C. area.

Pacers running stores has finally noticed Maryland exists and is opening this spring at the Downtown Silver Spring project. Pacers has two existing stores, one in Old Town Alexandria, Va and one in the Clarendon section of Arlington corridor, Va. According to Downtown Silver Spring locational maps and their website, Pacers will be taking the lonely corner store at the end of the Downtown project block – bounded by Roeder drive and Fenton Street.

  1. I am so glad someone has finally posted about Pacers. I was absolutely giddy to see their sign up. Seeing that not even the almighty Bethesda has been deemed worthy of a local running store, local runners should consider ourselves blessed. The nearest running stores, outside of the amazing Pacer’s, are in Rockville or Adams Morgan. Lets hope they bring with them weekday fun runs and perhaps even a local 5k or 10k. Perhaps even some cooperation with the Montgomery County Road Runners Club to bring their training from way out in Rockville to somewhere a little more accessible for us city-working folks. Either way, I’m glad I don’t have to trek out to VA to get some quality running shoes anymore.

  2. now let’s be honest…you can get quality running shoes all over the place in this town. You don’t have to go to VA or Adams Morgan. While you will get the exact same shoes, you won’t get the personal service you get from a homegrown store. And I bet Pacers will let you run up and down the sidewalk on Fenton Street to see if the shoes really fit well (Adrian Fenty’s daddy’s store in Adams Morgan is famous for letting customers do that. Now if he himself wasn’t so arrogant…).

  3. Where can I get my Asics Gel Nimbus in SS now?

  4. I am a biker. I run over runners on the trails! I want Big Wheels in downtown Silver Spring instead.

  5. I think they ut the bike shop from the transit center. Of course it was never a guarantee.

  6. IHY, bikers ride motorcycles. Cyclists ride bicycles. And if you’re going to run over anyone, run over the oblivious and inconsiderate walkers who walk two or three astride and/or wear their headsets so they can’t hear oncoming cyclists yelling “on your left”

  7. Yuppies, are you the guy in all spandex I see riding out of Summit Hills. You’re taking your life in your hands in that traffic. :P

Overall comment: Since I started reading this blog, I’ve begun looking at DTSS differently. Thank you for all the information on local construction and building design!

  8. Spandex should only be worn by young women. I am not that guy.

There used to be a great bike shop that used to be in the building across the street from the Discovery HQ on Colesville. I miss that shop. I think those relocated to Wheaton.

  9. The store you are referring to is called “The Bicycle Place” and they are alive and well, but not in Wheaton. About three or four years ago, they moved to Grubb Road, in the same shopping center as the Parkway Deli and Rock Creek Sports Club.
I can personally speak for all of us men who ride road bikes (skinny tires, fast speed): We wouldn’t be caught DEAD without our spandex cycling shorts. Why? Mainly, because the protective chamois built into them along with the sleek profile keeps our legs and butts from getting chaffed beyond recognition.

The dudes who say that spandex is only for women (and won’t wear the shorts because they are afraid people will look at their “package”) are just insecure.
