Silver Spring Citizens Advisory Board will be holding its Commercial Economic Development Committee Meeting today, 7:30pm at the Silver Spring Regional Center, 8435 Georgia Avenue. The agenda will include,

  • Discussion of County Code - Restrictions on Use of Alley Access(Impacts New Developments /serves as disincentive for pedestrian access to street level retail)
  • Zoning Text Amendment Revising Elements of the CBD Zones - Review and discussion of Planning Staff’s Recommendations
  • Update on Status of Proposed Library - Possible Impact of Proposed Purple Line Alignment/station

Discovery Communications

Discovery ownership swap complete. Silver Spring based Discovery Communications has reclaimed 25 percent ownership from Atlanta based Cox Communications. The $1.3 billion swap allows Cox to claim the Travel Channel and Travel Channel.com according to the Washington Business Journal.

66 percent of Discovery is now held by Discovery Holdings in Englewood, Colorado. The swap has led to speculation that Discovery Communications may be going public.

  1. What are the ramifications of potentially changing the Alley Access County Code???

  2. If developers are given access to public alleys, they can build garage entrances off those alleys. (They could use the alleys as driveways.)

    If developers are not given access, then they must place garage entrances off the roadway. This would create a driveway on a development’s footprint, which in turn would shrink a building’s size, create a point on the sidewalk where autos and pedestrians intersect, etc.

    This is all according to developers.
