Damn you, SS Scene. If I knew which councilmember was trying to keep NPR out of downtown SS, I’d start making calls NOW! Why do you do this to us?
If any organization would be welcome to Silver Spring by the anti-development hippie lobby, you’d think it’d be NPR.
(I like NPR, BTW.)
It might be an at-large councilmember who doesn’t think very highly of Silver Spring or Eastern MontCo for that matter.
I can’t wait to hear the reason for this one. I mean…it’s NPR for Christ’s sake…not a 10,000 square foot WalMart.
Even though I sympathize with the NIMBYs on some issues…this is the most assenine display of public official stupidity.
Yeah, my money is on Praisner. The “let’s ditch the Birchmere AND National Public Radio all in one fell swoop” candidate. Who the hell elected her anyway? We should bombard her office with calls on a daily basis. I could get a small cadre of volunteers to make her life very difficult…
Patients folks.
It’s not that hard to guess if you know your council members.
Elrich or Praisner. Which one? Spill the beans.
I bet Elrich, or maybe Trachtenberg. (Henry and I know how ridiculous she can be.) Downtown isn’t Marilyn Praisner’s district, and Valerie Ervin would roll out the welcome mat.
What is important is not WHO but it is WHY.
Does anyone know if National Public Radio is exempt from local and state taxes? If so, this could be the BIG reason why Elrich or Dutchy or anyone else would so reluctant to welcome a huge hybrid federal/non-profit entity such as NPR. It’s NOT because NPR is viewed as a liberal media organization even though every council member is a liberal Democrat.
Bringing in Discovery Channel is one thing because the corporation pays some bitchin’ taxes to Rockville and Annapolis for plopping down in Silver Spring. This is despite the tax incentives offered by Doug Duncan.
I bet NPR pays no taxes and this is a net loss for the county. It’s all about attracting coporations that pay for the privilege of locating in Montgomery County. Just a theory. Silver Springer might have the answer here.
Hmmm… You’ve got a point there, IHY.
Then again, wouldn’t the county and state still gain from payroll taxes?
At any rate, my money says Elrich is the road block.
One more thing: Photos from Sunday’s block party are posted on The Silver Spring Penguin:

Unrelated development question–does anyone know what is being planned for the vacent parcel of land on Fenton Street next to the Addis Ababa restaurant?
What? I agree with IHateYuppies? Surely, a sign of the apocalypse!
Hmmmm could he be an ex local professor?
