Clean up at the loading docks of City Place mall are responsible for significant contamination found in the Bennington Tributary of Sligo Creek.

Montgomery County’s Department of Environmental Protection issued a Notice of Violation to City Place Management on July 3rd.

Several months of investigative work, led DEP representatives Steve Martin and Dan McCann to the conclusion that the clean up practices at City Place loading docks flowed downstream into Bennington Tributary.

Because of the high correlation between the clean ups and the pollution in Sligo Creek, City Place management were told that they can no longer power wash the docks. All restaurants and other business must be in compliance as well.

City Place Management has hired an industrial cleaning service that will power wash the area and vacuum the excess waste water. If a spill occurs there are written guidelines that City Place management must follow.

Patrons are encouraged to contact Dan McCann (240-777-7743) and/or the
Montgomery County Dumping hot-line (240-77-3867) if they notice any contamination in the Creek.

Among the chemicals many businesses use are degreasers. These

chemicals consist of a variety of glycol ethers. Exposure to these chemicals can cause cancer, birth defects, heart problems, renal failure, and even alter the cells of male sperm.

Exposure to these chemicals usually results in one being monitor for a number of years.

Recently IBM had a class action law suit filed against then by their employee due to exposure. Some of the Chessie workers have filed similar lawsuits.

I hope that these businesses that have polluted Sligo Creed are fined.
